The Naming of the Dead
novel
A man in a fish market signs a two-year contract. The factor reads all nine lines aloud, because he always does, and stops after the ninth in case anybody wants to ask. Nobody ever asks. Four hundred miles west, past a boundary that is counted rather than defended, something is going up above the snowline — and the man building it has never lied to anybody about anything. Four people, two cities, and one arithmetic none of them can see the whole of. A woman who can feel exactly where the dead are, and cannot prove it. A warden who has found a pattern in a hundred and forty years of missing people. A clerk on a frozen boundary who writes down what he sees and refuses to guess. And a dock worker who took the job because the money was real. The dead do not charge the walls here. They cross a line, and somebody writes down what they looked like, and the count goes in a book. The horror is administrative, and it is patient, and it is already three years ahead of everyone. Updates daily at 1:18 PM Central (UTC−6). Slow burn, four rotating POVs, no system, no chosen one. The threads do not touch for a while. When they do, it costs. If it's working for you, a Follow keeps you in the loop and a Favourite genuinely helps it get seen. And if you get a few chapters in and have thoughts — good or bad — a Review does more for a story on this site than anything else I could do myself. I read all of them.
